Lot 4008 INTERESTING RARE LATE CIVIL WAR FACTORY ENGRAVED &

INSCRIBED HENRY RIFLE OF JOHN H. MCFARLAND, INDIANA VOLUNTEERS. Cal 44. S# 10073. This is the highest serial number on a Henry that I am aware inscribed to a Civil War soldier who joined his last regiment, 151st Indiana Volunteers on May 16th of 1865 and mustered out in December 1865, which would be absolutely correct for this mid 1865 manufactured gun. He served previously in 31st & 115th Indiana regiments. The engraving and inscription appear impeccable with similar style Mexican eagle & snake motif found on some early model 1866 Winchesters. Unfortunately rifle has been replated and it's original barrel has been refinished with new engraved address and serial number, but the gun is original.John Henry McFarland (1840-1877) had long Civil War service, all with Indiana. He is buried where he grew up in Round Hill Cemetery. The silver plate in stock "Lt. Col. A. H. Franklin / His Gun / 44 Henry" is later and unknown history, but possibly placed when gun was replated. CONDITION: good to very good overall as restored, matching serial numbers found on upper tang, stock, and buttplate. The serial number on heavily buffed & refinished barrel is restored as is the engraved address. Barrel does have matching assembly numbers stamped on rounded portion of barrel under loading sleeve and on rear edge of loading sleeve, front sight blade is replaced, rear 900 yard Henry sight is reproduction. Sling swivel plate in stock is missing sling stud. Stock has old refinish & longitudinal crack that was tightened with old screw on belly. Mechanics functional, worn & dark 5-land & groove rifled bore. (01-26374/JS). ANTIQUE. $15,000-20,000.
